Beat the Winter Blues: 17 Indoor Activities to Brighten Your Day

cozy living room with a chair against a brown, wooden wall with a soft light outside

I don’t know about you, but the cold, winter weather always makes me want to sit my butt down on the couch and do nothing but drink hot cocoa, wrap myself in a blanket, and watch bad tv. But, it’s actually a great time to stay active, engaged, and creative. I kind of had to psych myself up to write that last sentence, but it’s a case of faking it until you make it! When most of us are stuck inside it’s easy to get into a rut and develop a serious case of cabin fever.

I’ve put together a list of some ideas for indoor activities you can explore as hobbies. I hope these are helpful! Shoot me a message if you have any go-to hobbies you love to do during the winter :)

  1. Cooking and Baking: Experiment with new recipes, bake delicious treats, or learn to cook a cuisine you're unfamiliar with. Cooking and baking can be a fun and tasty way to spend time indoors.

  2. Crafting and DIY Projects: Try your hand at crafting, whether it's knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, or making jewelry. These creative activities can be both relaxing and rewarding. Plus, if you really find something you love to make you can sell them on Etsy and have a nice side business.

  3. Reading: Winter is the perfect time to dive into a good book or start a book club with friends or family. Reading is a great way to escape into different worlds and expand your knowledge; winter is the time I re-read the Twilight series (the millennial in me comes back to this series for pure nostalgia sometimes).

  4. Board Games and Puzzles: Gather friends or family for board game nights or work on jigsaw puzzles. Make it more fun by adding in some wine tasting with the games!

  5. Home Decor and Renovation: Take on home improvement projects, rearrange your living space, or redecorate rooms. It can be satisfying to create a more comfortable and beautiful environment.

  6. Art and Drawing: Explore your artistic side by drawing, sketching, or painting. You don't need to be a professional artist to enjoy this hobby!

  7. Gardening: If you have indoor plants, nurturing and caring for them can be a rewarding indoor hobby. Consider expanding your indoor garden with new plants or terrariums.

  8. Writing and Journaling: Start a journal, write short stories, or work on that novel you've always wanted to write. Writing can be a therapeutic and creative outlet. I love this book: the 90 day novel.

  9. Photography: Learn about photography and practice taking photos indoors. Experiment with different lighting, subjects, and techniques.

  10. Music: If you play a musical instrument or want to learn, use the winter months to practice or take lessons. Playing music can be a fulfilling and enjoyable indoor hobby.

  11. Online Courses and Learning: There are countless online courses and resources available on the internet. Consider learning a new language, taking up coding, or exploring a topic you're passionate about.

  12. Yoga and Meditation: Practice yoga and meditation to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. Youtube and Pinterest are great resources!

  13. Candle Making and Soap Making: Explore the world of crafting by making your own candles or soap. It's a creative way to make unique gifts or add personalized items to your home.

  14. Collecting: Start a collection of something you're interested in, whether it's vintage coins, stamps, or action figures. Collecting can be a fascinating and fulfilling hobby.

  15. Gaming: If you enjoy video games, board games, or card games, the winter is an ideal time to immerse yourself in gaming.

  16. Film and TV Series: Use this time to catch up on movies and TV shows you've missed or explore new ones. Consider starting a film club with friends or family.

  17. Online Creative Communities: Join online forums or communities related to your interests, such as photography, art, or writing. You can share your work and connect with others who share your passions.

Happy Hobbying!
